Open Access Key Figures

Publishing at Bielefeld University

The following figures illustrate publication activity at Bielefeld University. Only articles published by Bielefeld University members as corresponding authors are considered (articles with exclusively Bielefeld co-authorship are not listed). Due to the availability of reliable, structured data, only articles or journals indexed in Web of Science with a DOI are considered. Further evaluations and a description of the methodology can be found on the online service "Publikations- und Kostenmonitoring in Nordrhein-Westfalen (pkm_nrw)" of the openaccess.nrw state initiative — a project result of programme area 3, represented by Bielefeld University Library.

In recent years, the proportion of open access articles published in open access journals and in hybrid journals via transformation agreements has increased enormously. Now, only around a quarter of articles are published exclusively behind a paywall. Most articles appear in journals published by Springer Nature. The most frequently used open access publishers for publication in recent years have been "MDPI" and "Frontiers". A CC-BY licence is usually granted for the articles to be freely reused.

Publication Dynamics

The development of publication figures over the last ten years and the distribution of articles by type of access (definition of access types) can be seen in the following figure.

Publication shares of publishers

The figure below shows the distribution of publications among publishers with a share of at least 2% per year. Around a quarter of the publications are published by other publishers not mentioned here by name.

Journals with the most publications

Over the period under review, members of Bielefeld University published most frequently in journals as shown in the figure. It also shows trends over time in the publication figures for individual journals frequently used for publication.

Licence shares of publications

The licenses used for the articles and their shares (definition of CC licenses) are shown in the figure below.

Open Access Funding

Supported by the DFG and the Rectorate of Bielefeld University, open access publications have been funded since 2010. The following diagram illustrates the distribution of costs and the number of articles funded by individual publishers.
